Mid-Term and the Equinox

The daylight is now at about 12 hrs and 20 min., and gaining about 3 minutes per day. More time to study, as well as to get outside and think about chemical equilibria. It is somewhat strange that this particular chemistry text, has not introduced what i would call...the rest of thermodynamics, i.e. the second and third laws that are useful for understanding the relationships between heat, work and disorder that govern how systems change...eventually arriving at equilibrium. Maybe. Most of the systems we see around us...are far from equilibrium...and the direction of change is driven by non-equilibrium thermodynamics...a far more mathematically complicated situation. But I digress...

I put up a MC assignment for Chapter 15, so start looking at those problems. Once you understand how to solve basic problems in Chapter 15 we can apply these techniques to many areas of chemistry.

I posted last year's exam in course downloads, but as we were using a different text...it looks quite different. There are some kinetics problem that should look familiar...

For the exam on Wednesday, I mostly use problems from MC or those covered in class.

I posted what I could of a sample exam 1; for chapter 12 questions i'll probably just look to the MC assignment and the chapter summary. So...read the chapter...it's not a bad read.

On exam evening, if you can make it at 6 pm that might cause less confusion, however later (6:30 pm) is okay.

Chapter 12

In Chapter 12 we will take a brief tour of "Modern Materials". If you google the phrase, Material Science, you'll see lots of hits from a variety areas in both science and engineering. It is truly a multidisciplinary field due to the breadth of it's applications in electronics, aerospace, forensics, medicine, etc.,. Also, the size and types of materials explored is endless...ionic and covalent crystals, semiconductors, polymers, and many type of composite materials. Many of the google hits are university departments specializing in both the synthesis, characterization, and engineering of new materials. Check out MIT's website...and look at the Research Areas by the large number of various faculty from diverse academic backgrounds.

We will not spend more than a couple of lectures on materials, but I think it will be worth the time given how surrounded we are with so many of these new creations.

I also posted a new MasteringChem assignment for chapt. 12.

I posted a MC assignment for Chapter 7...some of the questions will require some thought and further investigation of many-electron configurations. So...bring your questions to class...otherwise the chapter is fairly short.

I'll also setup a few problems on MC for Chapter 3..later.

I'll be using this web resource...this blog to post information, links, old exams, powerpoints...pretty much everything for the class (except grades!). A blog has many advantages...and you can choose to participate by registering on Google (it's free) or by anonymously surfing the content or making comments. Unless things get out of control...the blog will remain open.

Another feature of blog you may know is that you can use RSS to add this blog to your homepage, for example if you use iGoogle or Yahoo (or just about any web browser) you can link...or feed this site to your webpage. By doing this you are automatically alerted to any new posts I make to the blog.

This site is also a great way to share questions...and answers; if someone comments with a question, I will post the answer so everyone can see how it is answered. Of course you can also email questions and see how long it takes for me to post an answer, although I will probably also respond directly to the email.

Okay. I'm looking forward to an exciting semester (Go 'Diggers!)...and I'll see you in class.
